1960s project
Musicians
-Janis Joplin
-Elvis
I chose Janis Joplin because I have always liked her. Ever since 8th grade when I learned a lot about her when my friend Allison Hirschman did a big project on her. I found that she stuck to what she beieved in even though she was a druggy and thats someone to look up too, someone who sticks to their beliefs.
I chose Elvis Presley because he is a big fan in my family and he was an amazing singer. I have also learned a lot about him and his life through my grandmother because she is a very big fan of him.
Artists
-Andy Warhol
-Alex Calder
I chose Andy Warhol becuase his paintings and his way of doing things are very colorful. It seems that all of his pictures and paintings ive looked at have been all color and nothing is dull.
I chose Alex Calder because i took a look at his art and i found it confusing and mysterious. Its kind of different and weird, which is also what i am into. I like creative things.
Movies
-Planet of the Apes
-To Kill a Mockingbird
I chose “Planet of the Apes” because i myself have seen it and it was a decent movie. And if this movie was made in the 1960′s and ive seen it that must be a pretty popular movie.
I chose “To Kill a Mockingbird” because it is a great emotional movie. I am a very emotional person and I love movies about family’s and their problems. Its just another great movie that i wouldnt mind watching.
TV Shows
-Adams Family
-Batman
I chose The Adams Family because i think its funny and i love spooky and scary weird things. I watch it sometimes til this day. Also my favorite holiday is Holloween so thats another reason why i like it.
I chose Batman because its been around forever and it will never get old to people no matter which Batman it is. They have newer Batman’s and whatnot but it all started in the 60′s which makes it more original.
Fads
-Drive-Ins
-Peace Signs
I chose Drive-Ins because they are amazing. When i first moved to N.H we use to go to the Drive-Ins every Friday night when there was still one in Woodsville. I think that they are very fun and im glad that they were introduced.
I chose peace signs because im all about peace not war. And i have a lot of things that have peace on them and peace signs because i just love the symbol for some reason. I also wish i was there in the 60′s to wear peace things like they did.
Sports Figures
-Jackie Robinson
-Wilma Rudolph
I chose Jackie Robinson because he was brave enough to join a team that wasent his own kind, well atleast back then he was different from everyone else. Its just very inspirational for someone to actually have the nerve to do that. Thats someone i look up too.
I chose Wilma Rudolph because she is a women that isnt very known of. Although she isnt quit known of she was a women who had polio at a very younge age and her main goal was to live and get better. Sooner or later she was the first American to win three gold metals in track and field during the summer olympics games.
Songs
-The Twist
-Oh, Pretty Woman
I chose The Twist because its a good song and I had to learn the song and dance for a project that i had to do and the dance was very easy. So im sure that the people of the 1960′s liked that the dance was so easy to do.
I chose Oh, Pretty Woman because its a random song. I also think the lyrics are funny and i think its upbeat and i like it.
Inventions/Innovations
-Man to the moon
-Laser
I chose the first man to the moon because it was a big thing in history and i personally wouldnt be able to do it because i wouldnt be brave enough to. I think that the world outside of ours is scary but now people go to space all the time.
I chose the laser because it is still used to this day and they’re fun. I dont think they have much purpose but i guess thats why people are so into them.
Slang Words
-Flip Flops
-Makeout
I chose flip flops because i love flip flops. I also like the deffenition of flip flops in the 1960s slang words. The deffenition was “Thongs (that go on your feet).” So i thought it was pretty funny.
I chose Makeout because the deffenition for 1960s slang was a kissing session in a Drive-In. I thought that was interesting because usually makingout means that people are kissing with their tounges. Atleast thats what it is these days.
Civil Rights Leaders
-Martin Luther King
-Malcom X
I chose Martin Luther King because he is one of the people i absolutly love learning about. I think that what he did was one of best things anyone did for this country. I look up to him for doing the right thing because you should always do the right thing no matter how scared or how hard it is.
I chose Malcom X because he was also another one who stood up and did the right thing. All the african americans were fighting for the same thing, but Malcom X and King actually did something about it.
Automobiles
-1967 Ford Mustange
-1967 Dodge Charger
I chose the 1967 Ford Mustang because its a hot car. I dont know much about cars but this is a very nice car. I also chose this car because my mom has actually riden in one and she said that it rides nice.
I chose the 1967 Dodge Charger because it looks similar to the 1967 Ford Mustang, and i think the Mustang is a good looking car and if it looks like the Charger then the Charger is also a good looking car.
Magazines
-Motion Picture
-Playboy
I chose Motion Pictures because it seems like a magazine that give out information about famous movie stars and when movies are coming out in theater and whatnot. I like that because I like to read what happens in the world of stars even thought some of it might not be true.
I chose Playboy because it was one of the most popular magazines back then. It also had some of the most famous girls in it as well.
Fasions
-Go Go Boots
-Headbands
I chose Go Go Boots because I think that if I were to be in the 1960s I would have worn them because i find them fasinating. I think that they were one of the most popular things worn in the 60′s.
I chose headbands because headbands are still around today. I wear headbands often as well. I dont think that the headbands that were used then are still used today because the headbands they had then were big and bulkey.
Politicians
-JFK
-Dwight Eisenhower
I chose JFK because he was not only a good president but by the looks of it, he was a great person. He was also the second youngest president and i admire that too.
I chose Dwight Eisenhower becuase he seemed like he knew what he was doing when he was president and took control. Even though he wasnt president very long in the 60′s he was still good.
Military Events
-U2
-Vietnam
I chose U2 because i think that that was another major thing in history that a lot know about. I dont know much about it but I know of it. I think people have their own decisions on whether or not it was a good idea or not.
I chose Vietnam because it was probably the biggest thing going on in the 60′s that resulted in all the actions that people took on the street. It was a time where people actually cared about what was going on in the war unlike today.
Books/Literature
-Where the Wild Things Are
-To Kill a Mockingbird
I chose Where the Wild Things Are because its all about adventure and having fun without having to worry about reality and things out in the real world. Every once in a while there is nothing better than a little imagination and adventure. I thought it beat all the others because of that reason.
I chose To Kill a Mockingbird as a book as well as a movie because not only does it beat others in movies but it deffinetly beats most books because in the book it shows more meaning and tells more of what happens. Like they always say, the book is better than the movie!
My Own(Actresses)
-Audrey Hepburn
-Julie Andrews
I chose Audrey Hepburn because i thought she was a great actress. Obviously there are others out there that are just as good but i know a lot about her. In 8th grade Abby Simano had to be here for a project that we had and I learned a lot about her life, and I thought she was a beautiful person that knew what she was doing. And she played in the popular show, Breakfast at Tiffenys.
I chose Julie Andrews because Mary Poppins was one of my favorite movies when I was younger, and I still watch it today. She is also a very beautiful woman. And in 1964 she was named the best female actor.
Cultural Events
-The Woodstock Festival
-Hippie
I chose The Woodstock Festival because I know that in the 60′s, rock and hippies were a big thing. I think that if i were alive in the 60′s I would have become a hippie that loved rock and roll. So I thought it was interesting how many people were there and what kind of people went.
I chose the term “hippie” and even though its not a “cultural movement” the hippies expressed their feelings and actions for the Vietnam war, which would probably be considered a cultural movement at the time.
Art Pieces
-Bridget Riley
-Richard Hamilton
I chose Bridget Riley because she was apart of the Op Art movement and I learned about the Op Art in this art class. So i thought it was pretty interesting to find an actual woman artist that was apart of it.
I chose Richard Hamilton because not only is he apart of the Op Art movement but he also did his own paintings of things. And his art seems like lonely art yet it is colorful at the same time, and i like that.
Authors
-Apollo 11
-Yuri Gagarin
I chose Apollo 11 because it was one of the most popular space events in the 1960′s. We sent three men out there that were actually brave enough to go out. I think that if I were asked to go to the moon I wouldn’t be able to accept it.
I chose Yuri Gagarin because he was the actual first man to land on the moon. He may not have been from the U.S but he was the first to go out there. And of course, the U.S had to be better than the russians, and thats when we attempted putting men out there, and finally succeded with Apollo 11
